“An examination of her body after death”

By Glen Colquhoun

I am writing about the poem ‘an examination of her dead body after death’ written by Glen Colquhoun. His purpose for this poem is to express his deep feelings for his deceased loved one. He uses two techniques which helps describe the two major emotions he shows towards Colquhoun’s loved one. He uses metaphors to describe the fond memories and he uses repitition to repeat his feelings of denial.

In ‘examination’ Colquhoun uses repitition to show how angry and raging he feels. He repeats the quote ‘you are not her shoulders’ which shows his emotion of denial and rage he is going through which also adds to repetition of the quote you are not her'. There is one keyword he uses in that quote. The keyword is ‘not’. It’s a negative word which adds to his feelings of denial. He was probably in denial because he had been surprised about her death and he may be also confused. The effects of these repeated statements offers me an understanding of what it feels like when someone close dies. It also helped me understand his emotional break down he is going through.

He also uses metaphors describing the fond memories he had had with his friend. The quote 'the sound of birds has gone away' tells me that Colquhouns friend had a sweet and pleasant voice. There is another quote that helped me understand his friend in more detail. 'Two fat worms' makes me understand that her lips were pink and big. It also gives out a vivid image of worms in the ground decomposing a dead body. It helps me understand that there are 2 images of her. One is of her alive which was part of Colquhouns remembrance and the other would be the image of death as Colquhoun looks at her death body denying what he sees.

In my opinion I think that Colquhoun has two side fighting against each other. The side where he goes back to the nice memories and the side of denial where he denies who he sees in the slab. I think the authors purpose was to describe his emotions of grief toward Colquhoun's friend. He used two techniques that I thought stood out. The metaphors was one where he used 'two fat worms' as a quote and similes which was the other helped me understand what Colquhouns friend may have looked like in the past and the present. They were used perfectly. What also stood out was the use of negatives to help people visualize a vivid image. Overall I thought that the poem was well written as he used various techniques to help readers understand his poem.
